Washington was defeated by the Chiefs after celebrating Sean Taylor's legacy

The Washington Football Team lost their second straight game, 31-13, to the Kansas City Chiefs at FedExField Sunday afternoon. The franchise held WFT legend Sean Taylor’s jersey retirement ceremony pre-game, but weren’t able to channel his energy against a flawed Chiefs squad.

Washington received the opening kickoff, and they quickly got a three-and-out. Mahomes and the crew marched 95 yards in 10 plays. With only 4:50 minutes taken off the clock, the Chiefs drew first blood with a two-yard Damien Williams rush touchdown.

Washington had a decent second drive, getting all the way to Kansas City’s 32-yard line before settling for a field goal on fourth down. The drive took 5:30 off the clock and made the score, 7-3. Mahomes hit a 49-yard pass to Mecole Hardman, which helped them get into the redzone. But Washington’s defensive back Kendall Fuller came through with a huge interception at the goal line. Sadly, Washington couldn’t capitalize and had to punt.

The Chiefs and Washington would trade field goals and fumbles in consecutive possessions, until finally The Team broke through with a touchdown drive before the half. The Chiefs got the ball back, but an ill-advised pass by Mahomes granted Washington a 13-10 lead heading into halftime.

From the third quarter on, it was all about Kansas City. The last four offensive drives for the Washington Football Team went like this: missed field goal, punt, punt, interception. Not the way the Team wanted to enter the season.

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke finished 24-39 for 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Running back Antonio Gibson was held to 10 carries for 44 yards. Receiver Terry McLaurin contributed only 4 catches for 28 yards. On the bright side, the Washington defense got three more turnovers and three sacks on Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.

The Washington Football Team now sits at 2-4, with the Green Bay Packers (5-1) and Denver Broncos (3-2) next up on the docket.
