USWNT Brings Home Bronze, Defeating Australia 4-3
Olympics- USWNT's offense comes alive against Australia.
After a dishearten loss to Canada, USWNT had a chance to win a bronze medal if they defeated Australia Thursday morning. The U.S did not waste any time scoring a goal. At the seven minute mark, Megan Rapinoe scored on a corner kick. However, the lead would disappear ten minutes later for Team USA. On a blocked goal mistake by U.S goal keeper, Australia scored a goal, tying the game up at 1-1.
Rapinoe answered Australia's goal with a second goal of her own at the 21st minute of the first half. After Rapinoe scored Team USA's second goal, Team USA got a bit passive with pressing Australia. Team USA extended their lead before break with a crossshot goal by Carli Lloyd to make it a 3-1 game.
Team USA was not done with showing off their offensive scoring abilities in the second half. Lloyd stole a pass, called her number, and kicked a straight on goal at the 52 mark to put Team USA up 4-1. Team USA briefly looked in full control of the game, but once again mishaps by Team USA cost them. Team USA goal keeper mistimed Australia header and watched the ball go into the net, cutting Team USA's lead to two, 4-2.
The pace of the game picked up at the 60 minute mark. Both teams were very physical and very aggressive with their press. Team USA had three on goal shots that went wide right late in the game. Team USA allowed Australia to get a break away goal at the 89 minute mark to make things very interesting with extra time added on, 4-3. Team USA did all they could do to keep Australia from tying the game and went on to win the game and a bronze medal.
