UNC had a second half meltdown in a loss to Kansas in the National Title game 72-69
After ending Coach ks career and sending the Blue Devils packing, UNC had to focus on a different type of beast in Kansas in order to complete their journey of another title. Prior to the game,a lot of critics felt like the Tarheels was going to be overwhelmed with the Jayhawks' length and would be squashed by them in a blow out.
The Tarheels looked like they were sleep walking the first seven minutes of the game. They allowed the Jayhawks to get out in the open floor and run. After being down 11-5, something started clicking with UNC and they went on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of the game, 12-11. Armando Bacot was keeping UNC in the game with his aggressiveness with getting to the rim and hitting some tough shots. Bacot's energy was what started tCarolina's engine. in a blink of an eye, the Tarheels jumped out to 10 point lead and had Kansas on the ropes with three minutes left in the first. They kept their foot on the pedal and extended their lead to 15 at the half, 40-25.
You would think with a lead, Carolina would not let off the gas coming out in the second half, but that was not the case. Whatever was said in Kansas's locker room ignited them. They went on a 22-10 lead to cut Carolina's lead to three. A few minutes later, UNC found themselves scratching their heads tying to figure out why they were down by six at the 10 minute mark of the second.
Caleb Love provided a spark for the Tarheels and kept them in striking distance.Back and forth both teams went with trading buckets. The only difference was Kansas was hitting from behind the arc, while UNC was scoring on the boards. Brady Manek hit a key put back rebound to put North Carolina up by one with 1:42 left in the game. UNC down by three with 10 ticks left had three cracks to hit a three, but failed to do so. UNC had one miracle on them. On an inbound pass, Kansas ran out of bounds by mistake, which gave UNC one more big ride to tie the game up and send it into overtime. UNC tried to get the ball in for a good looking three, but Love could not get any air space from his defender and shot an air ball as time expired.
