Things to look out for in the upcoming weeks for the Tigers
Clemson football practiced in full pads on Wednesday for the first time. The team switched from the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex to Jervey Meadows which is across the street from the practice facility. However, it has more of a high school practice vibe and with temperatures reaching triple digits yesterday, that's exactly what it felt like.
Here's what stood out about the camp's final media viewing session.
Running back Phil Mafah is the real deal. Mafah displayed his explosive speed and powerful running style that he will consistently break through tackles and gaining significant yardage all season. In spite of his size, standing at 6'1", 230 pounds, he is very agile. I also noticed his impressive stamina and ability to maintain high performance even in the sweltering heat. This makes him a key player to watch this season.
Quarterback Cade Klubnik was accurate on his red zone throws. The Tigers' offense worked on goal-line fades and slant throws. Klubnik threw fade passes to various receivers, including Antonio Williams, Tyler Brown, Bryant Wesco Jr. Passes were consistently made to receivers and enough room was provided in the end zone for players to get their feet down.
The injury bug is out. Running back Jarvis Green is among the top Clemson football players injured and missed another day of practice due to an undisclosed injury. While riding a stationary cycle during practice Wednesday, he was not dressed and wore a black sleeve on his left leg. He is one of four running backs competing for the backup position behind Phil Mafah. Jake Briningstool, Cole Turner, Jeadyn Lukas, Cade Denhoff, Stephiylan Green, and Vic Burley were also wearing green jerseys. The players were involved in warm-up stretches and position drills for the first three to four periods Wednesday. Wishing them all a speedy recovery.
