The road to the Super Bowl goes through Detroit as they defeated the Vikings 31-9 for the number one seed
With home field advantage and a bye for whoever won the game between the Lions and the Vikings, Sunday night football was a treat for fans. Despite, the injuries that Detroit faced all year, they were the team that a lot of teams feared. However, Minnesota and Sam Darnold were a surprise that came from a hidden spot. They are a team that found unique ways to win games and now they were in the driver seat of the number one seed.
Dan Campbell is known for going for it on fourth and short and he proved once again why they call him a "gambling" man. After converting on a fourth and five, Lions' running back Jahmyr Gibbs took off and sprinted to the house for a seven-yard touchdown to strike first on the scoreboard. Outside of that touchdown, the Lion's offense was pretty much shutdown for the majority of the first half. Jared Goff threw a crucial pick in which the Vikings put themselves on the board with a field goal, mid-way in the second quarter.
Late into the quarter, the Lions decided to go for another fourth and short. Now, you would think that Gibbs would get the ball, because he was gashing the Vikings three yards per run, but he did not. The Lions decided to get too cute and throw the ball, which was an overthrown ball. Minnesota took advantage of the field position and once again capitalized off Detroit's mistake with another field goal right before half to make it a 10-6 game.
Going into the second half, the Lions wanted to continue to put pressure on Darnold and like they did in the first half keep Justin Jefferson contained. Detroit maintained the ball majority of the third quarter, as they got back to Lions' football. They had the ball for eight minutes and got a touchdown out of the drive to extend their lead right before the fourth quarter. The Lions got their juices flowing and scored another touchdown at the start of the fourth to put the hammer on the game and put the Vikings in a chokehold. Detroit went on to win, but the statement of the commandment was, the Lions are the team to beat. Goff finished 27 out of 33 for 231 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 picks
