The Brock Purdy show hasn't been great in the last few games
Coach Kyle Shanahan of the 49ers is known for his version of the well-known West Coast offense and zone blocking schemes that his father was also very effective with. The offense that the Shanahans run is normally run first with a lot of play action passes that make the game easier for their quarterbacks. Due to the success of their offensive scheme, Kyle Shanahan has been through a plethora of starting quarterbacks and has been very consistent no matter who’s under the center, but with all that being said, Kyle Shanahan and his offenses have yet to win the Super Bowl in their two appearances one as offensive coordinator in Atlanta and the other as head coach in San Francisco. In both Super Bowls, Kyle’s offense had a lead in the fourth quarter that couldn’t quite hold up. Coach Shanahan's time in the Bay Area has been very successful, but he’s yet to find steady productivity and consistency at the quarterback position, as the 49ers have juggled three QBs in two years.
They started out with an up-and-down veteran in Jimmy Garoppolo, who led them to a Super Bowl appearance, but he struggled in big games against defenses who created pressure, and he didn’t show enough athleticism for coach Shanahan’s liking. In 2021, Kyle and the rest of the 49ers staff fell in love with North Dakota State’s young, athletic Quarterback Trey Lance. The young QB only played in 19 career college games before entering the draft, but the 49ers couldn’t resist, so they traded up in the draft, and it wasn’t cheap as they surrendered 4 draft picks, of which 3 were first-round picks.
Trey Lance started his rookie campaign out mediocre with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in his first six games before being sidelined by injury and watching Jimmy Garoppolo lead the team to the NFC championship. The following offseason, there were a lot of decisions to be made at the quarterback position, and with it being Jimmy’s last season under contract, it was pretty obvious that Trey Lance was being handed the keys, which kept the 49ers drafted Quarterback Brock Purdy with the last pick in the draft, making him Mr. irrelevant. The season started off wild as both Quarterbacks Trey Lance and Jimmy G were injured, which placed rookie Brock Purdy in a position to take hold of the position. The young quarterback came in and never looked back as he mastered the offense and managed the game’s strengths, which were accuracy, timing, and the ability to protect the ball.
Brock led the team to a deep playoff run before he unfortunately injured himself in the first quarter of the NFC Championship game. The 49ers went on to lose the game to Philadelphia, mainly due to their quarterback being out and having no solid backup because of injuries. San Francisco came into this season very hopeful and showed that they were all in on Brock Purdy as they traded Trey Lance away to Dallas and let Jimmy G walk in free agency as he joined the Raiders. The season began very promising as Purdy played tremendously and the team started out 5-0, but in these last two games, teams have figured out Purdy’s weaknesses, which are the blitz and trailing from behind, which puts him in a position where he has to throw the ball more than normal. Brock Purdy ranks towards the bottom of the league against the blitz, and it showed as he turned the ball over more frequently in the last two games. As this season progresses, we will see if Coach Shanahan and Purdy can work out the kinks or if the 49ers still haven’t solved their quarterback puzzle.
