Terrapins remain undefeated defeating Spartans 31-9

Eric Martinez

The Big Ten East division was the topic of discussion in several pre-season conversations. Mostly the teams discussed to win the division were the likes of Michigan, Penn State, and Ohio State. One team that remains a surprise to the nation is the Maryland Terrapins that Saturday have started their season 4-0 and right behind Penn State for first place in the division. The Terrapins outscored Michigan State in every quarter and accumulated 362 total yards with only 1 turnover allowed. Maryland’s defense caused 5 turnovers including 3 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa productively passed for 21 of 36 completions with 223 yards and 3 touchdowns, his lone interception came before halftime. Maryland was in new territory for this afternoon’s game as they did not trail early, nor did they trail the entire game.

“We talked all week long and for the last couple of weeks about getting off to a fast start, and that’s what we’re able to do. Defense came up big early on with the turnovers. We were able to convert those to scores. Anytime you come up with turnovers like we did today, it really helps you on the offensive side of the ball,” Maryland coach Mike Locksley stated on his team’s performance. Maryland will host their second Big 10 conference game next Saturday afternoon against Indiana University while Michigan State travels to Iowa to play a 3-1 Hawkeye team that has a nationally ranked defense.
