Sam Leavitt threw four touchdown passes, including a crucial 3-yard strike to Jordyn Tyson with just 16 seconds remaining, leading Arizona State to a thrilling 35-31 victory over Kansas on Saturday night. Kansas (1-5, 0-3) faced its fifth consecutive loss, with four of those games decided by a touchdown or less. Jalon Daniels threw for a season-high 260 yards and two touchdowns, while Devin Neal contributed with 71 rushing yards and a touchdown.
The game unfolded in record-setting heat, with a sellout crowd of 54,639 witnessing a kickoff temperature of 107 degrees, marking the hottest October game in Tempe since 2000.
Kansas briefly surged ahead 31-28 with 2:04 left when Daniels connected with Quentin Skinner for a diving 34-yard touchdown. However, the Jayhawks couldn’t seal the win, allowing the Sun Devils to march down the field in eight plays over less than two minutes.
Leavitt finished the decisive drive with a touchdown pass to Tyson, who evaded a defender for his second score of the night. Earlier in the fourth quarter, Arizona State took a 21-17 lead with a 1-yard touchdown run by Skattebo, following a crucial third-and-18 conversion by Leavitt to Tyson.
Arizona State tied the game at 14 just before halftime when Leavitt connected with Chamon Metayer, who sprinted 20 yards for the touchdown. Kansas struggled with penalties, including two on cornerback Cobee Bryant for holding and pass interference. In the second half, Arizona State lost Keyshaun Elliott and Clayton Smith to ejections for targeting, forcing them to miss the first half of their next game against No. 18 Utah.
