South Carolina shocked by Texas

Brandon Harley

The No.  The No. 2 Gamecocks suffered their first conference loss of the season after falling 66-62 to No. 6 Texas at the Moody Center in Austin on Sunday. This is the first time since Dec. 30, 2021, they lost a regular-season SEC game.

There were some eyebrows raised during the entire fourth quarter, which began tied 49-49 when forwards Chloe Kitts and Joyce Edwards did not appear on the court.  Without Kitts and Edwards in the lineup, South Carolina played small with four guards and Sania Feagin.  Senior guard Bree Hall had the task of Longhorn's star player Madison Booker, who finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

MiLaysia Fulwiley scored 13 points for South Carolina.  Joyce Edwards and Chloe Kitts each scored nine points.

Texas used its height advantage to create baskets by passing over South Carolina defenders.  With Hall glued to Booker, there wasn't much room to double-team when Texas forwards caught the ball in the paint.  That was the deciding factor.

The Longhorns won the rebounding battle 42-35 and had 15 offensive rebounds to create 19 second-chance points.
