South Carolina's home streak snapped by UCONN

Brandon Harley

As the No. 4 ranked South Carolina Gamecocks were routed 87-58 by the No. 7 ranked UConn Huskies on their home court on Sunday, one of the most shocking results of the 2024-25 NCAA women's basketball season occurred.

The loss snapped South Carolina's 71-game winning streak at home.  While the Huskies undoubtedly produced their   most impressive   performance to this point, South Carolina often looked sluggish on both ends. They couldn't find a consistent rhythm amid the beatdown.

UConn looks like the UConn of old led by Azzi Fudd who scored 28 points. Sarah Strong added 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Huskies who had lost their past four to the Gamecocks. Paige Bueckers had 12 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. The Huskies took control late in the first quarter and were up by 22 points at the half and didn't look back.

Uncharacteristically, South Carolina lost at home for the first time since North Carolina State defeated the Gamecocks 54-46 on Dec. 3, 2020.   The streak was the fourth longest in Division I history for women's basketball at home.

Joyce Edwards had 17 points to lead South Carolina.  Te-Hina Paopao finished the game with 10 points on 3-11 shooting along with 2 assists.

The end of South Carolina's impressive home winning streak marks a significant moment in women's college basketball, highlighting the ever-evolving landscape of the sport. It serves as a reminder that even the most dominant teams are not invincible and can face challenges from rising competitors. This loss may act as a catalyst for the Gamecocks to regroup and address areas for improvement as they continue their season.
