SMU drops first road game in Norman; Oklahoma improves to 2-0 topping Mustangs 28 -11
Oklahoma University opens their final season in the Big 12 against University of Texas on October 7th. Before the Red River Rivalry game, the Sooners had some interesting matchups this season that included a talented SMU team traveling to Norman, OK today. With all the excitement from SMU’s planned move to the ACC in 2024, Mustangs faced number 18 ranked Oklahoma that showed an explosive offense in week 1 scoring 73 points and not allowing any touchdowns nor field goals.
The first half saw Oklahoma score two touchdowns compared to SMU’s only field goal coming in the first quarter. SMU did show fight throughout the game. Being down 14 to 3 was more of a compliment to the Oklahoma defense. Oklahoma did force two turnovers with Mustangs fumbling and throwing an interception. SMU’s offense was efficient in terms of numbers, totaling 365 total yards to Oklahoma’s 367, but it was Sooners’ quarterback Dillon Gabriel that was the difference in Saturday’s contest. Gabriel threw for four touchdowns to extend the lead 28 to 11 with SMU scoring a touchdown and two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. If there is such a thing as a “good loss”, Mustangs received a gift in the form of lessons early in the season. SMU can take multiple lessons from this game as they prepare for their last season in the American Athletic Conference. The key for Mustangs next week will be to finish drives against Prairie View University in Dallas. Oklahoma improves to 2-0 and will have a short trip to Tulsa next Saturday afternoon.
