SMU captures first conference win over Charlotte 34 to 16

Eric Martinez

The talk around Dallas has been about the move that SMU Mustangs will make next year joining the ACC. The SMU coaches have all kept the focus on one play and one game at a time. The Mustangs entered Saturday’s game with the intention to climb in the American Athletic Conference standings. SMU had an overall record of 2-2, but Saturday kicked off the AAC games against Charlotte University. SMU defeated Charlotte 34 to 16 led by Jaylan Knighton that put the game out of reach when he ran for a 95-yard touchdown sprint.

Mustangs’ quarterback Preston Stone threw for 135 yards on 14 of 23 completions totaling 2 touchdowns. SMU totaled 363 yards and timely defense led to Charlotte turning the ball over on an interception and held Charlotte to only 4.0 yards per rush. SMU improves to 3-2 overall and now 1-0 in the American Athletic Conference. The Mustangs travel to Greenview, NC to face the 1-4 East Carolina Pirates that will be sure to challenge SMU regardless of their overall record. Charlotte hosts Navy in two weeks, and drops to a tie for 11th in the AAC.
