Seattle's special run comes to a close as the 49ers gets the W to end the Seahawks' season, 41-23
The NFL Wildcard weekend kicked off with the San Franciso 49ers and the underdog Seattle Seahawks. Both teams came into this playoff match with a lot of concern. The Seahawks are known to give up points to opponents, while the 49ers had to deal with a fairly young quarterback. who hasn't had that much experience in the NFL. Both coaches echoed this message throughout the week. "Stay calm, do not force the ball down the field, and do not turn the ball over."
On a slippery field and rain that blurred the vision of players, Seattle had the perfect plan to keep the ball on the ground, but their gameplan changed after the Seahawks found themselves down 10-0 late in the first quarter. Things started clicking through the air, as Geno Smith converted key third downs and put their team in the redzone at the start of the second. A couple plays later, Kenneth Walker III hit the burners on the edge for a nine-yard touchdown to get the Seahawks on the board and cut the 49ers' lead to a field goal. After the touchdown, Smith's confidence continued to grow. On the next possession, Smith threw a 50-yard touchdown pass to DK Metcalf to silence the 49ers crowd and took their first lead of the game, 14-13. By the end of the half, both teams made this a very intriguing game. Seattle was up 17-16 going into the second half.
Things got a little chippy between the divisional rivals in the second half. It seemed like every play; players were getting pushed or talking trash to the other team. The refs got involved and told the players to knock it off. Once again, the young Seattle defense could only do so much with the potent offense of the 9ers. They allowed the 9ers to march down the field without any resistance and allowed them to score at will. Down by two touchdowns, the Seahawks decided to have more urgency at the start of the fourth. Well, as stated above, the Seahawks did not want to turn the ball over in the game. They did not achieve that accomplishment, because the Seahawks had three turnovers, which contributed to more points for the 9ers. The 9ers put the game on ice midway in the fourth and will advance to the divisional round.
Smith finished 25 out of 35 for 253 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 pick.
Metcalf finished with 10 receptions for 136 yards
