Seahawks are offensively rebuilding heading into upcoming season
Seattle- After losing Russell Wilson to a trade with Denver and Chris Carson to an early retirement, things are looking very bleak for the Seahawks.
The Seahawks are starting their training camp tomorrow and have a lot of questions that are not answered as of yet. Who will be the starting quarterback, and who will be the starter as their go to running back? That is just the tip of the iceberg. Seattle has to find their identity and that may cause a lot of concern for 12 nation.
This is the first year since 2011 that the Seahawks do not have a quarterback that can impact the game like Wilson. Wilson was able to make the impossible, possible with extending plays with his legs and using his pen point accuracy to throw deep balls down the field. Without Wilson, the Seahawks have an inconsistent Drew Lock and an aging Geno Smith battling for the starting role as quarterback. Both quarterbacks have had their struggles with throwing the deep ball down the field and it may continue. Another factor that has been a nagging issue is D K Metcalf's inability to catch the ball on a consistent basis.
Metcalf has the talent to be an elite receiver and has shown that robotic speed burst with that 4.3 speed, but catching the ball consistently is something he has to improve on. Whoever is the starting quarterback needs to feel confident that Metcalf can handle the pressure of this season. They need him to be available and reliable
Last but not least. Since Carson was forced to retire because of a neck injured he suffered last season. It seems like Rashaad Penny may be the best running back the Seahawks have on their roster. He has shown some signs that he can alter a game, but injuries have been something he has yet to shake. Seattle needs a back that can take the pressure off of the quarterback and Penny could be that guy. He is a balance back that can run between the tackles with power and speed and can catch out of the backfield. What Penny needs to improve on is his blocking. There have been some snaps where he losses sight of the defender or doesn't chip enough of the defender, which has resulted in some big losses.
Playoff contention seems a bit out of reach for the Seahawks, but who knows, they could be an underdog team that makes some noise in the second half of the season.
