Raiders win on a bone headed play
It has been the year of the improbable finishes in the NFL. With the 50th anniversary of the Immaculate Reception approaching. The Raiders had another immaculate play this time it went their way. The Patriots were basically a kneel-down away from going into overtime. There were three seconds on the clock, and New England was at their own 45-yard line. Instead of taking a knee and going into overtime. Patriots handed it to Rhamondre Stevenson who found a hole. He pitched it to Jakobi Meyers, but it was one lateral too many.
Raiders defensive end Chandler Jones picked it off at the Pats' 48-yard line and only had the quarterback to beat. He stiff-armed him to the turf, and walked into the end zone, it was one of the wildest finishes you'll ever see. The win gives the Raiders a flicker of hope for their playoff chances. The Patriots desperately needed this win to keep their wildcard standing.
It was a win well within reach for the Patriots the Raiders blew another double-digit lead which has been the story of the season for them. New England took a 24-17 lead with just over two minutes left in the 4th quarter. The Raiders needed a miracle drive by Derek Carr. He converted on a stressful 4th and 10. Then he delivered, throwing a beautiful touchdown to Keelan Cole in the back of the end zone to tie the game at 24. In typical Raiders vs Patriots fashion, it came down to a long review.
It was a back-and-forth affair, but the Raiders were able to get the win and get to 6-8. While they are still well outside the playoff picture, the Raiders still have a chance. The Raiders will travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers on Christmas Eve. The winner of that game will be 7-8 with a chance to sneak into the playoffs with two more wins.
As for the Patriots a play of that magnitude has to be explained. It will be a play that will be replayed for years to come. "I thought I saw a Mac open. I didn't see Chandler Jones at the time," Jakobi Meyers explained. "I just thought he was open and tried to get it to him and let him try to make a play with it. But the score was tied, so I should have just went down. It's not even about Rhamondre. Once he gives it to me, I'm smart enough to know it's tied and go down with it," Meyers said. "Whether he gave the ball to me or not, he gave it to me because he trusted me. I got to be smarter with it.""I thought I saw a Mac open.
