Panthers' preseason debut ends in defeat to the Patriots 17-3
In a report earlier this week, Panthers quarterback Bryce Young, the number one pick in the 2023 draft, did not appear for the game, while his projected backup Andy Dalton was unable to play due to a strained quadriceps muscle. This was also Carolina's first game under a new coach, with Dave Canales making his debut as the seventh coach in the franchise's history. Known for his innovative offensive strategies and strong leadership, Canales previously served as offensive coordinator for the Buccaneers.
Jack Plummer was able to complete 11 of 21 passes for 86 yards, while Mike Boone, one of the seven running backs currently on the Panthers' roster, carried the ball eight times for 34 yards during the game. Veteran WR/TE Jordan Matthews led the team with 3 catches for 48 yards.
It was a preseason game, but Bryce Young and Andy Dalton's absences affected the Panthers' offense. Without their primary and secondary quarterbacks, the team was unable to execute plays and maintain momentum. As a result, they struggled to score and produce overall on the field due to their lack of key players. The third overall pick in the 2024 draft for the Patriots Drake Maye made his debut and played one series. Christian Gonzalez, a 2023 first-round pick who had his promising rookie season cut short by a shoulder injury, started and played the opening two series.
New England’s new coach, 38-year-old Jerod Mayo made his debut tonight. It was the first time since Jan. 2, 2000, that the Patriots played without Belichick on the sidelines.
