Lions had one shot and blew a second half lead
The Lions, yes the Lions were one game away from being in the Super Bowl, but first they had to somehow defeat a tough 49ers team. Jared Goff has been very exceptional thus season and Detroit needed him to have a quick start to the game. If thy shall ask, they should receive. Detroit struck gold in a hurry in the first quarter and air mailed a statement to the 49ers by scoring 14 points. Outside of scoring, their defense was physical with the 49ers, as well as picked off Brock and turned that turnover into points. By the end of the half, it looked like the Lions were cooking the 9ers with a meat grinder 24-7.
Dan Campbell wanted the Lions to keep the pressure on the 9ers and not allow any big plays down the field in the second half. That lead that the Lions had disappeared in two snaps of one's finger and the 9ers tied the game up at the three-minute mark of the third, 24-24. I don't know if the moment was getting too big for the young Lions, but dropped passes and mental mistakes were the key factors that halted drives late in the third quarter.
Everyone knows that Campbell likes to go for it on fourth down and did not convert on two big plays in field goal range. A couple plays later, the 9ers went on to score a touchdown to put the game on ice, 34-31. Goff finished 22 of 35 for 222 yards.
