Eric Martinez

For anyone that has ever watched Lionel Messi play at former clubs, FC Barcelona, PSG, or even his native country Argentina, the world-class precision of goal-scoring and passing has been on display throughout the game. Major League Soccer is being treated to a phenomenon that has never been seen before. In sports, we use the term “in his prime” very loosely and at times refers to an athlete that may be playing at their highest peak of form. Leo Messi winning the World Cup in December of 2022 has changed the landscape of Argentinian soccer and opened more doors for Messi. Referred to “El Rey” (The King) Messi departed from Paris St. Germain and signed a historic contract with Major League Soccer and Inter Miami.

In his debut on Saturday night, Messi clinched a victory with a flawless free kick to win the game 2 to 1 against Mexican side Cruz Azul coming off the bench in the Leagues Cup group stage. Tonight, Leo Messi started his first game and fans at the DRV PNK Stadium were not disappointed. In addition to his two goals scored, he added an assist and several lethal passes for scoring chances that Atlanta United could not counter against. Former FC Barcelona legend, Sergio Busquets, also started his first game with Inter Miami and had a very effective game as the holding center midfielder. Miami head coach, Gerardo “Tata” Martino commented about the 4 to 0 victory, “It was a good performance and I’m pleased we were able to make our fans happy.

A very good game and we took another step in the right direction.” Inter Miami now has qualified for the Round of 32 in the Leagues Cup after sweeping their group stage. It is apparent that the skills that Messi and Busquets bring to Miami will help win games and also create space. Another former FC Barcelona, and former World Cup winner, Jordi Alba, is also awaiting to make his debut since his signing on July 20th. He will be another player that will be a dangerous option coming from the left back position that has world-class touch, unique scoring ability, and most importantly has many years of experience knowing how to play with a player like Lionel Messi. Expect Inter Miami to fight for the Leagues Cup championship and the MLS title in the next few years.
