Lachi Unveils 'Mad Different' Series with the Debut Performance Video 'Out of the Dark'
Updated: Nov 7
Acclaimed singer, songwriter, and disability rights advocate Lachi is making waves with her innovative concert series, Mad Different, and the launch of its debut performance video, Out of the Dark. This groundbreaking series is dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices through a fusion of powerful music and storytelling, reshaping how we perceive disability, talent, and activism in the arts.
The Mad Different series kicks off with Out of the Dark, showcasing Lachi’s artistry through high-production visuals and compelling narratives that resonate deeply with audiences. This first installment features a series of intimate, unplugged concerts filmed at Amazon Music Studios in New York City, coupled with behind-the-scenes footage and artist interviews. Viewers are offered an exclusive look into the lives of intersectional artists, focusing on the diverse experiences of Black/Brown, Queer, Trans, Neurodivergent, and Disabled individuals.
Lachi collaborates with a diverse lineup of world-class female musicians and celebrated co-artists, each contributing their unique perspectives to the stage. Among them are non-binary neurodivergent artist Medusa and deaf performer Indi Robinson, promising a rich exploration of identity and belonging through their original songs.
In Lachi’s own words: “As a Black woman, I was told to keep my head down to avoid being perceived as aggressive or a ‘mad Black woman.’ As a person with a disability, I was forced to fit in. This led to me (and so many like me) hiding my spark, my truth, my soul. The world wasn't built for people like me. I'm mad, and it drives me. I'm different, and it elevates me. It's time we celebrate that – our mad, our different.”
Mad Different transcends mere performance; it stands as a community-driven cultural movement. Fans are encouraged to engage with the creation of each performance through platforms like TikTok and YouTube, sparking conversations about identity and difference. By using the hashtag #MadDifferent, audiences can share their own stories of self-acceptance, creating a welcoming space for all voices to be heard and celebrated.
The series debuted with the single Out of the Dark, released on October 25th, perfectly timed for the Halloween season. This haunting, jazz-inspired track explores themes of self-liberation and the journey toward embracing one’s authentic self. Featuring Lachi alongside co-artist Medusa, the song combines thick beats and visceral melodies with unapologetic storytelling, promoting neurodiversity and empowering outcasts. Medusa, known for their avant-garde 'revenge-pop' style, has captivated audiences from underground venues to major events like NYC Pride and SXSW.. Check it out!
Listeners can experience Out of the Dark across various platforms, with a performance video alongside acoustic and fully produced versions available for streaming.
Upcoming releases from the Mad Different series include A Girl (November 2024), Diseducation (December 2024), and That Kinda Black (January 2025), each continuing the focus on identity and empowerment.Join the celebration of voices living their Mad Different truths and don’t miss the debut of Out of the Dark.
