King Henry puts his fingerprints on Ravens OT win
Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow exchanged touchdown passes throughout an exciting match that culminated in overtime, ultimately resulting in a 41-38 victory for the Baltimore Ravens over the Cincinnati Bengals.
The game was decided after Derrick Henry's impressive 51-yard run placed the Ravens at the Bengals' 6-yard line, allowing Justin Tucker to kick a 24-yard field goal. This capped off a thrilling contest that saw over 700 yards of passing and nine touchdown passes, highlighted by Tucker's 56-yard field goal with 1:35 remaining in regulation to tie the game.
“It was a complete shootout in the second half,” said Baltimore coach John Harbaugh. “This is a fantastic win against a strong opponent.”
The Ravens regained possession at their own 43 after Evan McPherson missed a 53-yard field goal attempt due to a fumbled snap. On the following play, Henry made his crucial run.
Despite the Bengals (1-4) leading by 10 points three times in the second half, Jackson consistently rallied the Ravens (3-2). Burrow's screen pass to Ja’Marr Chase resulted in a 70-yard touchdown, putting Cincinnati ahead 38-28 with just under nine minutes left.
The Ravens responded with an impressive 11-play, 70-yard drive, culminating in a remarkable 6-yard touchdown pass from Jackson to Isaiah Lively. Jackson demonstrated poise, recovering from a dropped snap before scrambling and evading Bengals defensive end Sam Hubbard to make the throw.
“He was calm and ready,” Henry noted about Jackson.Following an interception by Burrow on the next drive, Cincinnati stalled on their final drive of regulation, allowing Tucker to kick the game-tying field goal.In overtime, after Jackson lost a fumble, it seemed McPherson would secure the win for the Bengals. However, a mishap with the snap led to McPherson missing the potential game-winning kick.
“I should make every kick, regardless of the situation,” McPherson stated.
Jackson completed 26 of 42 passes for 348 yards and four touchdowns, adding another 55 yards on the ground, including two touchdown passes to Lively. Burrow was 30 of 39 for 392 yards and achieved a career-high five touchdowns, two of which were caught by Chase and Tee Higgins. Chase had an outstanding game with 10 receptions for 193 yards, while Higgins added nine for 83 yards.
“Perfect execution was essential, and we fell short,” Burrow reflected.
Bengals running back Chase Brown expressed his frustration, saying, “This one is really disappointing. That sums up my feelings on the game.”
Henry, who has been impressive in his first season with the Ravens, struggled against the Bengals' defense for much of the game, recording 14 carries for 41 yards and even being stopped for a safety in the second quarter. However, his pivotal 51-yard run in overtime helped set up the winning field goal.
“What I saw after the handoff was just green grass, and I aimed to get as close to the end zone as possible,” Henry said, finishing the game with a total of 92 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter.
