Kamari Lassiter impresses coaches at Texans' training camp living up to his nickname ‘Locksmith’
Head Coach DeMeco Ryans has a process on evaluating players that are eligible for NFL Drafts. Ryans is a cerebral coach that likes to pick the brains of prospects at the Senior Bowl, NFL Combine and player visits in Houston. The more tape that coach DeMeco Ryans watched on Georgia cornerback Kamari Lassiter, the talent, work ethic, and performance in games is what stood out to the entire coaching staff. Coaches often are intrigued with a player’s character and personality and that’s exactly what Coach Ryans did. Teammates and opponents were contacted by DeMeco Ryans.
The overall reviews were glowing and falling to number 42 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, Lassiter was drafted and has not disappointed since joining the Texans. “Everything has been positive with Kamari. He’s exactly the guy we saw from the Georgia film. He’s dialed in, and a lot of people call him a ‘dog.’ He is a dog. Just remember the Georgia tape and how physical he was when it came to tackling. Starting out such a young career and where he is right now in training camp, I think he’ll continue to ascend and get better. If it’s in meetings or on the field, he always locked in. Which is one reason his nickname is the “Locksmith.” When asked about the nickname, Kamari emphasized, “That’s just me. That’s who I am. I feel like I came in and showed who I am, and that’s the kind of person I am – I’m the Locksmith. I want to lock stuff down wherever I am.”
