Jey Uso and Charlotte Flair punch their ticket to Wrestlemania after winning the Royal Rumble

Tarrian Rodgers

We are officially more than 75 days away from Wrestlemania 41 from Las Vegas. The night was headlined by the men’s and women’s Royal Rumble matches. Each had 30 entrants, and only one emerged. On the women's side, a former winner won for the second time, and in the stacked men's side, an underdog came through for a shocking victory. The men and women’s Royal Rumble carried a few surprises. The surprises in the women’s rumble match were the return of Alexa Bliss, Trish Stratus, the debut of newly signed Jordynne Grace and the return of Nikki Bella. In the men’s rumble there were funny spots such as ISHOWSPEED and the return of AJ Styles and TNA Champion Joe Hendry.

The WWE Tag Team Championships were on the card in a two-out-of-three falls match, and that match ended with the return of The Street Profits. Cody Rhodes and Kevin Owens took their heated rivalry into another Undisputed WWE Championship bout, and it ended in brutal fashion.

Women's Royal Rumble match: Iyo Sky and Liv Morgan kicked off the evening's first match. NXT's Roxanne Perez, women's intercontinental champion Lyra Valkyria and women's United States champ Chelsea Green next joined the match. Green celebrated after throwing all her opponents over the ring, but her victory lap was premature. The other five women held on, re-entered the ring and put their boots to the women's U.S. champ. B-Fab, Ivy Nile and Zoey Stark then entered at No. 6, No. 7 and No. 8, respectively. Jordynne Grace was the evening's first surprise entrant. The former TNA Knockouts champion was a surprise entrant last year but recently signed a deal with WWE. The match's loudest ovation went to Alexa Bliss (No. 21), who's been absent for two years. Bliss walked out to her old theme music but wore attire honoring Bray Wyatt. 14-time women's world champion Charlotte Flair returned at No. 27 after a 13-month layoff and laid everyone out, before eliminating Michin and Niven. . The evening's final surprise was former champion Nikki Bella, entering at No. 30. Stratus eliminated LeRae, later she helped Nia Jax eliminate Stratus. It was the start of Jax's dominance over the match. Jax consecutively eliminated Sky, Morgan, Belair, Naomi, Vaquer, Stratus, Rodriguez and Bella, most of whom were fighting on the apron when Jax pounced. The final three were Flair, Jax and Perez. Flair tossed Jax before eliminating Perez to win her second Rumble.

#DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) (c) vs. Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin) (Two Out of Three Falls match): It was a quick paced match that saw both teams hold a 1-1 tie going into the final fall. MCMG's overwhelming offense put them in a strong position to win before the wheels fell off. A masked man, later revealed to be Montez Ford, distracted Shelley and the referee while Angelo Dawkins bent a crutch around Sabin's back. #DIY isolated Shelley with Meet in the Middle to score the final fall.  After the match Street Profits who seemed to have a heel turn beat the champs with a bent crutch.

Undisputed WWE Championship Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Kevin Owens (Ladder match): This was a brutal match. This has by far been Cody Rhodes best feud since being champion. Rhodes put Owens through multiple painful spots. He dropped Owens with a snap suplex onto a ladder.  Most excruciating was Rhodes' backdrop that smashed Owens' spine against the edge of a ladder. The challenger powerbombed Rhodes into the flat of a ladder before hitting a fisherman's buster through another ladder. Owens arguably got the worst of it after his head and neck cracked off the ladder.Sami Zayn entered the ringside area, building off Owen's previous offer for them to help each other win tonight. Owens got to his feet first but was caught by a Cross Rhodes.  A bloodied Owens hits Rhodes with a low blow and set up a package piledriver on the table. Rhodes found his footing and hit Alabama Slam on Owens through a ladder propped between the ring and table. The table folded in half, and so did Owens. Zayn watched idly as Rhodes retrieved his belts.

Men's Royal Rumble match:Rey Mysterio and Penta were revealed as the first two entrants. The luchadors shook hands before exchanging strikes. Chad Gable added to the match. Carmelo Hayes entered the match defiantly. Hayes failed to toss Gable out of the ring, ending with him eating a mighty German suplex after Gable caught him off a springboard. Santos Escobar rubbed the crowd the wrong way by hitting Mysterio with a 619, which Mysterio later threw back at him. Escobar also hit Penta with a beautiful destroyer. Gable nearly tossed all his opponents out of the ring but ate a quadruple superkick for his overzealousness. Akira Tozawa drew the No. 8 spot but didn't make it to the ring. Hayes laid him out at the entranceway, forcing chief content officer Paul Levesque to call an audible. Internet star IShowSpeed replaced Tozawa, hilariously equipped with a knockoff Bloodline graphic. IShowSpeed helped Breakker eliminate Otis and celebrated with an impressive backflip. While Speed was pandering, Breakker started building steam hitting the ropes. Speed turned around right into a terrifying, full-impact spear. Breakker overhead pressed Speed out of the ring into Otis' waiting arms. Instead of placing Spee down gently, Otis effortlessly tossed Speed over his head, onto the announcers' table and the floor.

The evening's next surprise was TNA world champion Joe Hendry, who received a great reaction from the Indianapolis crowd. Hendry tore through the competition until the next competitor showed up, Roman Reigns (No. 16). "The Original Tribal Chief" speared half the field. Reigns and Hendry's brief meeting delighted the crowd but only lasted a few seconds before Reigns tossed him from the match. Reigns and Breakker leaped into dueling spears with Breakker shockingly coming out on top. It was a huge moment for Breakker, but short-lived as Reigns tossed Brekker to the floor.

AJ Styles had returned from injury just before Strowman, and John Cena entered his final Royal Rumble at No. 23. Cena tossed Strowman out before hitting Balor with an Attitude Adjustment to the floor. Cena and Reigns met for an epic face-to-face that was interrupted by CM Punk (No. 24). The audience was on their feet as the three superstars stared each other down, but their meeting was also cut short. Seth Rollins broke the trend by immediately pummeling on Punk. That left Reigns and Cena to scrap as the action resumed.

The final six were Cena, Punk, Reigns, Rollins, Jey and Paul.A succession of finishers followed, leading to an intense brawl between former Shield allies, Reigns and Rollins. Punk took advantage of the bitterness between Rollins and Reigns by eliminating both. Paul quickly tossed a distracted Punk from the match. Punk, Rollins and Reigns all continued brawling outside. Rollins stomped Reigns onto steel steps.

Cena, Jey and Paul remained in the ring. Cena, showed off his strength by putting both opponents on his shoulder for an Attitude Adjustment. Uso slipped off and cracked Paul with a superkick, presenting Cena with an opportunity to clothesline Paul out of the ring. Cena and Uso exchanged signature moves and near eliminations in a dramatic closing sequence. Ultimately, Uso dodged an Attitude Adjustment and shoved Cena to the floor. Cena returned to the ring where he hugged Jey and showed a sign of respect. It was almost a passing of the torch moment.
