Jake Paul defeats 58-year-old Mike Tyson in Netflix spectacle
Friday night’s Jake Paul and Mike Tyson bout had the world talking. Although Iron Mike was the fan favorite, he looked 58 years old in the ring. Tyson struggled to mount any significant offense as the 27-year-old Paul picked him off with jabs throughout the bout. The judges scored the fight as a route 80-72, 79-73 and 79-73 for Paul.
The fight was Netflix's first attempt in the live sports industry and the stream wasn’t good; there was constant lags and buffering. Between the main event and the stream quality this event was lucky it was catapulted by two strong undercard fights. Katie Taylor retained her belt in a controversial decision against Amanda Serrano. Mario Barrios retained his belt in a split drawl vs Abel Ramos.
As for the much-hyped main event Tyson slapping Paul at the weigh-in was the most significant action between the two fighters. Mike came into the ring with a knee pad on his leg. Tyson’s right knee seemed visibly injured. Mike stormed in from the opening gate. However, by the 3rd round all his energy seemed to be gone.
"I didn't prove nothing to anybody, only to myself," Tyson said of his performance. "I'm not one of those guys that look to please the world. I'm just happy with what I can do."
The curiosity of the bout was that Paul (11-1, 7 KOs) couldn't knock out Tyson, who is 31 years his senior. Instead, he used lateral movement and routinely popped Tyson with jabs. Neither fighter was in much danger, and Paul remained in control throughout, landing 78 of 278 punches. Paul is normally brash and cocky after fights and didn't bother calling anyone else out to fight.
Mike Tyson hilariously called Logan Paul out for a fight. Which made Logan respond, “I’ll Kill you Mike.” Jake made a comment about potentially fighting Canelo Alvarez "Everyone is next on the list," Paul said. "Canelo needs me. I'm not even going to call him out. He needs a payday. He knows where the money man is at."
Meanwhile on Twitter current undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev said he’d put his belts up to fight Paul. Probably won’t actually happen.
