Frisco Classic crown DBU as tournament champion, improving to 10-1 on season
The crowds came out starting Friday afternoon with excitement for a weekend of great college baseball on the horizon. Game 1 of the Frisco Classic featured Dallas Baptist University against the surging Arizona Wildcats. DBU was able to have 13 hits to Arizona’s 9. DBU emerged victorious 4 to 3, in an epic pitching performance by Ryan Johnson that pitched for 6.2 innings, recording 14 strikeouts on 3 earned runs. DBU was off to a great start for the tournament. Game 2 saw the Crimson Tide of Alabama against Indiana University.
A dominating performance by Alabama routing Indiana 12 to 0 that was called final in 7 innings. Alabama and DBU stayed undefeated heading into the Saturday games. Alabama and Arizona played an exciting game for Game 3 of the Frisco Classic. The game went 9 innings, with Alabama improving to 2-0 on the tournament, beating Arizona 7 to 6. Game 4 surprisingly showed that Indiana belonged to play in this tournament by defeating DBU 9 to 7 and now improved to 1-1 on the tournament and dropped DBU to 1-1 on the tournament.
Sunday’s Game 5 was a day full of runs scored starting with Arizona beating Indiana 12 to 1 in 7 innings. Arizona and Indiana ended the tournament with a 1-2 record, and now set up the championship game Alabama (2-0) for the tournament against DBU (1-1) for the weekend. Alabama got out to a quick start going up 5 to 3 in the 4th inning, but DBU continued to battle it out, and scored 2 runs in the 6th inning with a Krauss two-run homerun to tie the game and force extra innings. DBU’s Grant Jay launched a two run left-center homerun in the 12th inning to clinch the Frisco Classic for Dallas Baptist University 7 to 5 over Alabama and improve their season record 10-1 and will be a force to be reckoned with in Conference USA and possible Regional and Super Regionals.
