FIBA Hall of Fame Class of 2025: A Celebration of Basketball Legends

The FIBA Hall of Fame is set to welcome an illustrious group of nine inductees in its Class of 2025, featuring prominent figures from the basketball world, including Spanish legend Pau Gasol, multi-time champion Dawn Staley of the USA, and esteemed coach Mike Krzyzewski. These individuals will be honored during an enshrinement ceremony on May 17, coinciding with the FIBA Mid-Term Congress in Bahrain.

This year’s class includes eight exceptional players and one legendary coach, each recognized for their outstanding contributions to the sport of basketball.

Pau Gasol: A Titan of Spanish Basketball

Pau Gasol, a towering figure in Spanish basketball, is celebrated for his pivotal role in Spain's rise to international prominence. His defining moment came at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2006 in Japan, where he not only earned MVP honors but also led Spain to its first major trophy. A five-time Olympian, Gasol carried the Spanish flag during the London 2012 Games and secured three Olympic medals. Additionally, he was instrumental in Spain’s success at the FIBA EuroBasket, where he clinched three titles, and he also captured two NBA Championships with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Dawn Staley: A Dual Force in Women’s Basketball

Dawn Staley's impact on women's basketball is profound, both as a player and a coach. During her playing career, she guided the USA to FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup titles in 1998 and 2002, and she triumphed at three Olympic Games, earning gold medals each time. Notably, she was the flagbearer for the USA at the Athens 2004 Olympics. Transitioning to coaching, Staley led the USA Women’s National Team to gold at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in 2018 and the 2020 Olympic Games, adding to her legacy with a total of 10 gold medals as an athlete.

Mike Krzyzewski: The Architect of USA Basketball’s Success

Affectionately known as 'Coach K,' Mike Krzyzewski is synonymous with excellence in basketball coaching. He revitalized USA Basketball following a disappointing performance in the 2006 World Cup. Under his leadership, the "Redeem Team" secured the gold medal at the 2008 Olympics, followed by a World Cup victory in 2010. His tenure culminated in a total of three World Cup titles and two additional Olympic gold medals before he stepped down in 2016 to focus on his storied NCAA coaching career, where he has amassed five championships.

A Diverse Class of Inductees

The Class of 2025 also includes a remarkable roster of players from around the globe:

  • Andrew Bogut (Australia): Known for his defensive skills and playmaking, Bogut led Australia to its only gold medal at the 2003 FIBA U19 World Cup and enjoyed a successful NBA career, including winning the championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2015.

  • Ticha Penicheiro (Portugal): A highly decorated guard, Penicheiro won the EuroLeague Women title in 2007 and a WNBA Championship in 2005, and she holds seven national titles across different countries.

  • Leonor Borrell (Cuba): Often regarded as the greatest female player from Cuba, Borrell was a standout performer at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, where she averaged 26.7 points per game in 1986.

  • Alphonse Bilé (Côte d'Ivoire): A key leader for the Ivorian national team, Bilé captained his country to its first AfroBasket title in 1981 and later guided them into the inaugural FIBA Basketball World Cup.

  • Fadi El Khatib (Lebanon): A central figure in Lebanese basketball, El Khatib competed in three consecutive World Cups and helped his country achieve significant success in the FIBA Asia Cup.

  • Ratko Radovanovic (Serbia): A member of the legendary Yugoslav national team, Radovanovic contributed to their success at the EuroBasket, World Cup, and Olympic Games, securing a total of nine medals.
