Double overtime needed in Wyoming upset win over Texas Tech 35-33
The talk of the week turned into the realigning of programs to Power 5 conferences. In what could have been a historic Mountain West Conference vs. Big 12 conference matchup, Wyoming University converted a key 4th down to tie the game in 2OT and a game-winning 2-PT conversion to top Texas Tech 35 to 33 at War Memorial Stadium. Senior quarterback for Wyoming, Andrew Peasley, displayed extreme efficiency passing for 2 touchdowns complemented by 149 yards on 18 of 34 attempts.
Wyoming running backs controlled the pace of the game combining for 171 rushing yards with 2 touchdowns scored. Texas Tech demonstrated a fight that has not been seen in several years that Red Raiders fans should be pleased with. Senior quarterback Tyler Shough threw for 338 yards on 31 of 47 completions for 3 touchdowns. His timely 4th quarter drive allowed Texas Tech field goal kicker, Gino Garcia, to tie the game with 41 seconds left to send it to overtime. Wyoming could not be denied.
A five-yard touchdown run from QB Andrew Peasley gave Wyoming the 27 to 20 advantage to start the first overtime. The Red Raiders quickly tied the game on a 6-yard run by Tahj Brooks to even the score 27-27. Double overtime was where the game was separated. Texas Tech completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jerand Bradley, but were unable to convert on the two-point conversion. Red Raiders defense had to hold Wyoming to not allow a touchdown and the 2-point conversion.
The cards were dealt to Wyoming, and the Cowboys were ready to make the call. Wyoming capitalized on a 11-yard touchdown pass from John Michael Gyllenborg and secured the win when Sam Scott ran for the two-point conversion for the final score 35 to 33. “Andrew Peasley is as tough as boot leather. As much as he got hit, he kept hanging in there,” Wyoming head coach Craig Bohl said during the post-game press conference. Wyoming was in the conversation for the Mountain West crown and now have shown the Cowboys can handle the non-conference schedule. Wyoming hosts Portland State University next Saturday before their clash in Austin with the Texas Longhorns the following weekend. Texas Tech faces a challenge in Week 2 hosting the Oregon Ducks that scored an impressive 81 points during their week 1 matchup against Portland State.
