Concerns for the Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals struggled defensively in a 42-14 defeat to the Washington Commanders, surrendering 216 rushing yards and four touchdowns. This loss drops their record to 1-3, raising concerns about the talent and effectiveness on both sides of the ball.
Washington’s offense, under the guidance of former head coach Kliff Kingsbury, dominated the trenches. Running back Brian Robinson Jr. led the charge with 21 carries for 101 yards. The Commanders also utilized Jeremy McNichols effectively, who contributed with eight carries for 68 yards, while quarterback Jayden Daniels added 47 yards on eight carries. Daniels, a former Arizona State star and Heisman winner at LSU, threw for 233 yards, completing 26 of 30 passes, with one touchdown and one interception.
Arizona's Kyler Murray opened the game strong, connecting on 16 of 22 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown to rookie receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. However, that early score was short-lived as the Cardinals struggled to maintain momentum throughout the game. They failed to apply pressure on Daniels, finishing with only one quarterback hit, while Murray faced a relentless Washington defense that recorded four sacks and three additional hits.
Despite a solid performance from running back James Conner, who rushed for 104 yards on 18 carries, the Cardinals received limited offensive support from their skill players. With tight end Trey McBride out, Harrison led the receiving corps with five catches for 45 yards, while second-year player Michael Wilson and slot receiver Greg Dortch each contributed 38 receiving yards.
Overall, the game highlighted significant issues for the Cardinals as they seek to improve moving forward.
