Chiefs escape in a shootout with Panthers 33-31
Kansas City- Patrick Mahomes threw four touchdowns in the victory over the Panthers.
The Chiefs' offense sputtered in the first half against the Carolina Panthers. Tyreek Hill was a non factor until mid-way in the second quarter. The Panthers' defense played physical with Hill and made sure that they had a defender playing over the top. Hill finished the half with five catches for 55 yards.
The Chiefs were down 14-3 at the start of the second quarter, but stormed back late in the half to cut the Panthers' lead to four, 17-14.
Late into the third quarter, Mahomes drove his team down the field and capped off the drive with a five- yard touchdown pass to Clyde Edwards-Helaire to take the lead for the first time in the game, 20-17. In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs' offense started to come to life, as Mahomes picked apart the Panther's defense.
Mahomes threw a 28-yard touchdown strike to a wide open Hill to open up the lead, 26-17 with 12 minutes left in regulation. The Panthers answered right back with a touchdown of their own with under 10 minutes left to cut the Chiefs' lead to two, 26-24.
The Chiefs thought they iced the game with Mahomes throwing his fourth touchdown of the day to Hill to put the Chiefs up over Carolina 33-26. However, Teddy Bridgewater was not going out without a fight.With under two minutes left, the Panthers scored a touchdown to make it a two point game, 33-31.
The Panthers stopped the Chiefs from converting a third and long and got the ball back with enough time to potentially win the game. With .2 seconds left in the game, the Panthers went for a 67-yard field goal and went wide right.
