ASU Upsets Utah

The Sun Devils improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12, defying preseason predictions that had them finishing last in the conference. Meanwhile, Utah, which was favored to win the Big 12, fell to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

“The key takeaway from last night is our rushing statistics; we managed to run the ball effectively,” said coach Kenny Dillingham. “We also did a solid job of containing their run game, which is a significant part of their identity. While I wish I could say this victory establishes us at a higher level, it doesn’t. However, it does indicate that we are moving in the right direction and that our efforts are paying off.”

ASU, which had a disappointing 3-9 record last season, showcased a powerful second-half performance led by running back Cameron Skattebo and a strong defensive display.

Skattebo made a mark with two impressive touchdown runs in the second half: a 50-yarder that put ASU ahead 20-16 late in the third quarter, followed by a 47-yarder that sealed the game at 27-19 with just over two minutes remaining. He finished with 22 carries for 158 yards and added four receptions for 41 yards.

“Coach Dillingham always says that big-time players make big-time plays. I tell him every week to give me the ball on every play,” Skattebo stated. “Sam (Leavitt) trusted me, and we executed a play that we knew would work. Interestingly, we practiced that over-the-shoulder catch all week, even though I hadn’t run that specific play before. Sam gave me a chance, and I made the catch.”

ASU's defense pressured Utah quarterback Cam Rising throughout the game. After missing the previous three games due to injury, Rising completed 16 of 37 passes for 209 yards, but he was intercepted three times, with Caleb McCullough making two pivotal picks.

“For me, winning is everything,” McCullough said. “I’m not focused on stats; I just want to do what it takes to win. This is my final year of college, and my main goal is to secure victories because winning benefits everyone. So, knowing I contributed with an interception, and we came out on top makes me very happy.”

ASU's next matchup is against Cincinnati on October 19, while Utah will host TCU on the same day.
