Angelique Kerber defeats Nami Osaka in the opening of Olympic play

Olympic women's singles tennis kicked off with a match between Naomi Osaka (Japan) and Angelique Kerber (Germany)In the first set, Osaka had the lead for a bit, but Kerber fought back and won the set 7-5. The reason why Kerber won the set was Osaka was shooting herself in the foot with unforced errors and lost confidence with her backhand shot.

The second set, Osaka was determined not to make the same mistake as the first set and game out the gate firing with the backhands. Kerber got herself back into the game by defeating Osaka's speed with re-directing where the ball was going to drop, which had Osaka on her heels. After tying the game up in the sixth game, you could see that Kerber was in control of the game. Kerber kept the ball in short, which gave Osaka trouble with keeping the ball in play. She went on to win the second set 6-3 and advanced to the next round.
