All the Diamondbacks can do is wait after a victory over the Padres
The Diamondbacks secured a crucial 11-2 victory over the San Diego Padres in their season finale, keeping their playoff hopes alive for at least one more day. Now, they await the outcome of Monday's doubleheader between the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves to determine their postseason fate.
Arizona's chances hinge on the results: a sweep by the Mets would eliminate the Braves, while a Braves sweep would knock the Mets out. If they split the games, both teams would advance, leaving the Diamondbacks out of the playoffs. Should Arizona clinch a wild-card spot, they would face the Brewers in Milwaukee on Tuesday, the same location where they began their impressive playoff run last year.
The Diamondbacks' decisive win featured a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by a towering two-run homer from Ketel Marte. The offense, which had been struggling, exploded for 16 hits, including seven extra-base hits. Eugenio Suarez reached significant milestones, recording his 100th RBI and his 30th home run in the game, while teammates Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Jake McCarthy each contributed three hits.
On the mound, right-hander Brandon Pfaadt delivered an outstanding performance under pressure, allowing just two runs (one earned) over 5 1/3 innings, striking out nine batters. Ryne Nelson closed out the game, pitching three hitless innings in relief.
Finishing the season at 89-73 marks a solid improvement from last year's performance, yet the high expectations—bolstered by a franchise-record payroll and a 93 percent chance of making the playoffs just a week ago—mean that missing the postseason would be seen as a major disappointment and a historic collapse.
However, if fortune smiles on them and they make it to October, it will provide the Diamondbacks a chance to build on the momentum from last year’s playoff run, marking their first consecutive postseason appearances since the franchise's early days.
The Mets and Braves are set to begin their doubleheader Monday at 10:10 a.m. MST, with Game 2 following shortly after. Manager Torey Lovullo mentioned the possibility of holding a workout at Chase Field while they keep an eye on the doubleheader. The team plans to have their bags and equipment ready to fly to Milwaukee right after the games conclude.
