Aces great watches the younger generation of South Carolina pull out a victory over Auburn

Brandon Harley

No. 2 South Carolina won its 70th straight home game on Sunday with an 83-66 victory over Auburn behind 18 points from super freshman Joyce Edwards. Ironically, the Gamecocks' victory came on a day the program retired the No. 22 jersey of 2017 national champion and three-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson.

As Auburn tied the game at 27 midways through the second quarter, Chole Kitts scored the next five points to start a 13-3 run to take control, and the Gamecocks never looked back.

The Gamecocks won their 56th consecutive SEC regular-season game and 13th in a row over the Tigers.  MiLaysia Fulwiley finished with 17 points and Kitts added 13 points for the Gamecocks.

DeYona Gaston scored 31

points to lead Auburn.

Joyce Edwards showcased her talent and poise on the court, contributing significantly to South Carolina's victory. Her 18 points came from a combination of powerful drives to the basket and precise shooting from mid-range. Edwards' performance not only energized her team but also demonstrated her potential to be a key player in future matches.

The retirement of A'ja Wilson's No. 22 jersey is a significant honor, acknowledging her outstanding contributions to South Carolina's basketball program. Wilson played a pivotal role in leading the Gamecocks to their first national championship in 2017 and has since become a dominant force in the WNBA, winning three MVP titles. Her impact on the team and women's basketball as a whole is commemorated through this prestigious recognition.
