2022 East-West Shrine Game: Team West defeats Team East 25-24
The 97th edition of the East West Shrine Game got off to a commanding start as Notre Dame’s quarterback Jack Coan got team west out to a fast beginning going 10 of 13 for 91 yards and a touchdown in a little more than a quarter of work. He led the West offense right down the field on its opening drive. Going into the 4th quarter the West had a commanding lead of 25-8
Brown’s quarterback EJ Perry did his best to bring the East squad back after being named the team's QB practice player of the week. The Boston College transfer went 13 of 18 for 241 yards and 3 TDs, as he was named the game's Offensive MVP after entering the game in the second half. Perry was able to stretch the ball downfield, getting the East team back in the game and his strong performance throughout the week certainly upped his draft stock.
The story of these college all-star games are what players will do enough to stand out in the draft? This game had a number of breakout performances. Both teams relied heavily on the run game. North Carolina’s RB Ty Chandler broke free for runs of 21 and 16 yards. He ran 11 times in total for 69 yards and added an eight-yard reception. He showed good vision and an ability to hit the hole quickly and get east and west. Florida State's Jashaun Corbin also had a great impact rushing for 50 yards on 8 carries with a TD. The West's ability to run the ball was the story of the game, as it outgained the East on the ground 143-56.
Jackson State linebacker James Houston may have been the best defensive player on the field for the East as he had a big hit in the run game, stopping Ty Chandler for a loss. He was also able to put pressure on Iowa State quarterback Brock Purdy in the fourth quarter. Houston is an intriguing prospect after transferring from Florida. He had 16.5 sacks last season for head coach Deion Sanders. However, another linebacker took home the defensive MVP and it was Navy LB Diego Fagot.
The Navy linebacker capped off a strong week of practice with 7 tackles 1 TFL and 1 sack. All week he was a thorn in Miami quarterback D'Eriq King’s side, batting down a number of his passes while in coverage he showed that he's not just an in-the-box 'backer. Fagot is a two-time first-team All-AAC selection who led the Midshipmen in tackles in each of the past three seasons.
The East team was coached by Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach D'Anton Lynn, while the West team was coached by Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Marcus Brady. The East-West game has helped improve the draft stock of many players. Some of the notable NFL players to have participated in the game include Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Trey Hendrickson, Green Bay Packers pass-rusher Za'Darius Smith and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.
